Well after numerous rentals and borrowing kayaks from friends I finally broke down and ordered my Wilderness Systems Pungo (Bermuda color scheme) last night. It should be here in a couple of weeks...now all I need is some less than freezing temps so we can get out on the water.

This years models come with the Phase 3 seats as standard equipment. Not that there was anything wrong with the older seats, but for those that are familiar with them....we all now that phase 3 kicks ass.

Very anxious to get the season started.

is it a sea kayak or a river kayak?

when I go white water I just go upside-down--it doesn't matter what the weather is outside.

(though the water up there has to be way cold!)

One of these days I'm going to splurge and get an oversized kayak and mount a 45-60lb thrust electric on that sucker. :)

I'd also like to find one of those skinny boats they use in team rowing. What are they called? Well, anyways, I'd like to hook up a 20hp motor to one of those babies just for the hell of it. I bet it would be fun on a smooth lake.

Me too!
Although, if I took this boat out in the surf, I think I'd get 0wn3d pretty quickly--it's long and has quite the rockered keel.
You lake folk and your monstrous play-boats....what are we going to do with you?
:)

This is a very stable Kayak..maybe not for white water surf, but its initial and secondary stability are excellent. I also wouldnt say that it's monsterous :) Ive seen touring kayaks that would dwarf this little 12 footer.

Us lake folk, lol....I plan to do a lot of fishing from it as well. We have a lot of excellent little lakes around here that dont offer any boat lunches and are home to some tasty trout :)

Plenty of streams/rivers/creeks here too to cruise around on a weekend. Next year I might grab a white water kayak. A friend of mine would sell me his dagger with all the gear real cheap

You're talking to a guy who rides an 8-ft boat :), but I did take my gf out in a tandem once that was probably 16ft and I felt like I was paddling a semi.
I dunno much about whitewater but for surfing, you generally want a fairly flat bottom to make it less rollable (the whole concept of stability changes when you're going sideways down a wave) and also a bit shorter do that you can skip up and turn it. It's a bizarre game.

, if you don't mind me asking, what did you pay for it? I'm looking to buy a kayak for recreational, exercise, and fishing purposes as well and can't really seem to find much around here(Iowa, go figure). Twelve foot is ideal because that is the longest I can go without needing a boat permit.

the whole setup ran me 650....that included a good set of paddles, PFD, gloves, some cozy waterproof pants and shirt for the chillie days and a skirt. I was able to get a great deal through Galyans by going with two of my friends and buying 3 kayaks. it's tough to find a pungo used because they are so popular and no one seems to want to sell them. I didnt have to pay for shipping even though mine is a special order (color) since we bought three.

I almost forgot, if you want to do fishing e*bay has a killer deal on the pungo angler...We were going to go that route, but he didnt get back to us in time about being able to get 3 of them.

Pungo Angler on Ebay

But i see it has already been sold...keep your eye open on that one, he seems to put one up for sale almost every week.

<< hey just don't run over us poor surfers. we don't like getting hit by kayaks >>

Bah. Most of the time you just pass harmlessly over the poor surfer. :)
Actually, I try to do my best not to kill the surfers, but for some reason there is a select few who don't seem to understand the concept of:
If you collide with a 40+ pound kayak whose rider carries a long paddle, you will not prevail.
And since they don't understand this, they'll line-up right on top of me. Maybe they don't think I can actually surf on a kayak, but they're wrong. I do my best to keep a healthy distance from other surfers, but for some reason they don't always feel the same...and the stretch of beach I stay on doesn't exactly get crowded enough to warrant a close lineup.

Ah well. Most of the time it's no problem but once in awhile we'll take the same wave at the same time and get mixed-up, but where I come from we don't take it too seriously. Just make sure everybody is conscious and keep on going. Not to mention, on a kayak, I have a longer range than the average surfer, so I'm usually catching waves far enough out it's not an siie.

And of course, it's only a select few who can't figure it out. Most of the surfers know the dangers and we keep a healthy distance from each other.
