I finally broke down and bought my 1st DSLR today. It's not the one I wanted, but I found a deal too good to pass up. Anywho it's a Canon S1, so my question, I'm looking up accessories and see the Remote Switch RS-60E3, in the compatible list it says

SL1 body

I see a bunch listed like that, then a bunch listed like this

EOS Rebel T4i EF-S 18-135mm IS STM Lens Kit

My camera's coming with 2 lenses, one's a 18-55 STM. What does it saying only body on the compatibility list exactly mean? I tried Googled this, but I'm not sure how to word it, so I'm not finding anything. So it'll work with my camera without any hiccups? I'm confused why it lists some cameras with lenses and some as body.

oh man, i wished you had bought my t4i package in the FS forum. i woulda thrown in the wired and wireless remote too.

i dont know if the rs-60e3 will be compatible with your sl1 camera. when i searched for a remote for sl1, all i saw was the wireless remote, not wired.

You typed S1, but perhaps you meant Canon SL1? Because the Canon S1 is a point-and-shoot, not a DSLR.

That said, the RS-60E3 is compatible with the SL1 (check the question/answers section under the Amazon page for the RS 60E3). Don't worry about how they list the compatible cameras (with or without lens) - compatibility is only with the body, not the lens.

Also, why would you not get the Canon RC-6, a wireless remote instead of the wired one? Wireless ones are more convenient, by far.

Congrats on the new camera! What lenses did you get with it?

DOH! Yes lol I got the SL1 not the S1, I did order the Amazon Basic wireless remote. But I'd like a wired one too for when I'm behind the camera. The reviews I was reading, the wireless ones will only work if you're directly in front.

luv2liv - I couldn't have swung buying yours right now. I got the kit on QVC for 6 payments. $499 broken into 6 $94 payments is something I can budget lol. I did a lot of research and I know this is an entry level camera, but it's a good starting point and there are tons of lenses I'll probably end up buying.

radhak - Thanks for the info, just weird how they list the cameras that work with it. It's coming with the 8-55 STM & 75-300mm Lenses. From my Googling, a pretty good starting point, but I'll definitely be getting at least 1 more. When I'm able to afford one I already have my eye on the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM. Looks killer, and it's white so it'll match the white body of my camera :D Nah probably not that expensive of a lens, but I will be buying at least 1 nice one after I do my research. Got a Canon Pixma Pro-100 lined up, people are blowing them out cheap on Craigslist because they got them for free with their cameras. For $150 that's going to be the best photo printer I can buy.

I'd urge you to use what you have for awhile before buying any other gear.

After using what you have for awhile, it can become more readily apparent what you'll actually use.

i.e., maybe you need wiiider.
Or maybe you want more zoom.
Or maybe you do more portraits.
Or more low-light.

Each of those (generally) require a different style of lens, and your habits will lead you home.

My budget will keep me from buying any lenses for a good while lol. Next on my list is a tripod, a Gorillapod and a bag. As for the camera itself, I plan to take your advice and use it until I'm comfortable and good with it before I even consider buying a lens. I might get a flash, but even that I'll probably wait on. My previous camera was an Olympus OM-1, yes a 40(?) year old film SLR. So the jump to digital will take me awhile to adjust.

Last year ( or the year before? ), Canon introduced a new 50 f1.8 that retails for $99 and it gets super reviews.

Amazon has tons of camera bags to choose from - Amazon branded bags are a good value.

I remember seeing a shoulder strap thingy with a quick release where you could mount the camera and pop it off quick to snap a pic. I Googled and couldn't find anything, I started to think, maybe it was a Kickstarter? I can't find anything on that, even for a failed product.

It wasn't like a Black Rapid, this one the camera mounted pretty tightly directly to the shoulder. I know I saw something, does anyone know what I'm talking about? I'm assuming it was maybe a crowd funding project that never got off the ground. But I'm still wondering what it was.

This is a sweet little camera, I know it's the smallest DSLR and a good amount smaller than the prosumer ones. But it fits nicely in my hands, and while from holding the prosumer models in my hands @ Best Buy, I know it not nearly as well built. It still feels solid. I'm thinking at a low ISO I should be able to get decent 13x19" prints out of it.

I didn't read the fine print on the Canon rebate form about having to buy the camera and the Pro-100 printer on the same receipt to be eligible for the rebate. Oh well lol.

For anyone interested, I got it on QVC, $499 with a 18-55 STM & 75-300mm Lens. Which is $100 less than any other site I'm finding it on. And they offer Flexpay, so I got 6 payments to pay it off. Only took a few pics with the 75-300, I'm pretty impressed with the zoom on it. And the reviews I'm finding are all pretty good. I spent 5 minutes earlier scratching my head trying to figure regardless what mode I was in why my max shutter speed was 1/200 WTH?? Oh, the flash was up lol. I got a lot of learning ahead.

lots of DIY straps on youtube. i think i will get this one since the default strap is awful on the neck
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsQKGP3Fpaw

I had that strap.
The Black Rapid clone.
http://www.amazon.com/Fotasy-NSQF-A...1454481112&sr=8-15&keywords=black+rapid+strap

And it failed, bouncing my 70-200 f/4 face first.

It doesn't fail where you think it fails - it fails at the barrel.

Black Rapids have been known to fail at the barrel as well.

If you're not carrying much weight, it might be ok.
If you get one, you might consider adding a camera tether.
