Used my C&R FLL for the first time tonight. Ordered a Mosin Nagant 91/30 with hex receiver.

Anyone have suggestions of ammo?

Mosin Nagant = World War I/II (interwar modifications could have happened) Russian bolt action rifle.

My roommate bought one from Big 5 for about $80. No hex receiver though, but it still is a nice rifle and well worth the money. I'll probably pick one up next sale. Either that or the Mossberg they sell with extra 18.5" barrel.

Usually the best way to go. :p

I bought surplus ammo from www.aimsurplus.com - it was the best deal I could find.

I've never understood the attraction of old WWI/II bolt action rifles. A friend of mine had a Swedish Mauser and it is one of the ugliest, crudest weapons I've ever seen. He was banging on the wall of a shed with it once and the fucking thing went off.

I buy surplus ammo from J&G. I've had decent results with the Bulgarian heavy ball, but a lot of people really seem to like the light ball Czech Silvertip. Just remember to clean the rifle every time after shooting since the surplus ammo uses corrosive salts in the primers.

I would suggest getting a recoil pad unless you only plan on shooting while wearing a down parka, the rifle definitely kicks. Also, remember that the Mosins were sighted in with the bayonets mounted. The rifle will still shoot consistent groupings without the bayonet, but they will be farther away from the point of aim.

The recoil on the M91/30s isn't that bad. You get into the M38 or M44 and then its time to watch out.

Also OP, if you plan on getting more investing in some headspace gauges would be a good idea. Don't want any nasty surprises because someone swapped components at some point.

*shrug* It may just be that I'm a skinny guy without any natural "padding", but I can't fire more than 20 or so shots from my 91/30 without it tearing up my shoulder. I can fire 7.62 NATO all day long without issue from an FN FAL, but the Mosin with heavy ball will leave me quite bruised. With a cheap recoil pad though, I can put 100+ rounds through the Mosin without hardly noticing.

I love my M44. Big flame, big kick, cheap, cheap ammo. I shot it from the bench once, after 2 shots on my right shoulder and 2 shots on my left, it was all I could stand, and I had a yellowish bruise that night. But when standing, 30 or 40 rounds is no problem.

There's so many things wrong with this statement, I don't know where to begin.

That's where I buy ammo for my gun, sometimes they'll have deals on surplus boxes of 780 rounds for $80 shipped. Enjoy your gun!!

Ammoman has been good to me too, remember that shipping is included in the price.
