That is normal these days for laptops. They come with the OS installed and give you a key to activate it when you boot and load for the first time. They also usually provide a backup copy of the OS in a hidden partition.

If you can open that up, you might be able toburn your own CD. It is unlikely Microsoft will send you one. You can try your laptop OEM for that as well.

Microsoft has unlicensed copies of windows. I got one when i cracked my cd. They sent it to me for free, but they might charge you. Depends on customer service rep.

Microsoft isn't going to replace an oem version, though. If this were a retail copy you'd get a new cd from MS. If you know of anyone who has a generic oem cd of the same kind (home or pro) that's bought from Newegg or wherever, that will work just fine with the laptop. Else you will be needing to call the laptop's manufacturer. For some reason they believe the $0.50 savings in costs is well worth it especially considering they can now charge you much more for a copy of the restore cds...

i'm not sure if this is considered legal, but if you have the key and download an ISO and burn it, is that illegal? you're not hurting microsoft as you're usuing your key, right? it might be better to contact your laptop manu and order a CD from them.

ForumMaster is correct. The license of windows goes along with the license key, not with the software. You can legally download an OEM copy of XP and use your key. There's no problem to that. It's the license key that costs the 100ish, not the actual cd.

The only possible problem with downloading is "how can you be sure the copy is clean of Virus or other issues" ?
Otherwise, yes it is legal .. best bet is borrow a copy of the proper type (Home or Pro .. Retail or OEM) from a
friend and make a copy of it .. then use your key with it, if needed ... I for one, when I buy a new computer will
always insist on the cd's from the supplier .. even if it costs an extra $20 or so when I buy the computer. I do not
trust hidden recovery partitions .. you paid for the Software .. you should get the CD with it
