Building a planned first-time overclock with:

Opty 165
DFI nf4-Ultra D
Enermax Liberty 500W
Zalman 9500
Lian-Li 7B vs. 1000B

Seems like there is a lot of disagreement and/or differences in opinion regarding optimum memory solutions. I understand that much of the debate is to due to slight differences in the way users choose to tweak their systems as well as the lack of "universal" componentry (i.e. your GSkill/Mobo may be different than my GSkill/Mobo combo).

With that in mind, I have narrowed my memory choices to these GSkill options
1. F1-4000USU2-2GBHZ DDR 500 (PC4000) at 3-4-4-8 @ 2.6-2.8V
2. F1-3200PHU2-2GBZX Value Series DDR 400 (PC3200) 2x1048 2-3-2-5 @ 2.6-2.75V
3. F1-3200PHU2-2GBNS DDR 400 (PC3200) 2x1048 2.5-3-3-6 @ 2.6-2.75V

HERE

as well as this OCZ option (2x1048 at 2-3-2-5 at 2.6V):

OCZ

and this Corsair XMS option (Twinx2048-3200c2pt 2-3-3-6 at 2.75V):

Corsair

Some have argued in favor of the HIGHER speed GSkill package despite the higher latencies. Meanwhile, despite OCZ's package apparently being mega-popular, many reviews suggest that it is limiting in overclocking efforts.

To be frank (and my name is Dave):

I have modest overclocking goals: 2500-2600 max, happy at 2400.
Will use this system for lots of video editing, as well as the standard assortment of tasks. Not a big gamer.

After reading and reading, I appear no closer to being able to make this decision than I was when I started.

Thoughts?

These sticks are made of Samsung UCCC chips.

These sticks are made of Infineon BE/CE-5 chips.

And a comparison by an XS member.

It's basically a toss-up. A slight difference: Infineon tends to do tighter timings at lower speed. Samsung tends to clock higher with looser timing. It comes down to compatibility/stability, IMO.

Dont waste your money because under the best senerio you will pick up 2-3% over value ram.

The ram will not limit your overclock because you can use dividers(which do not take a performance hit) to keep the ram at a stable speed.

The above statement is correct, to a certain extent. What wasn't mentioned is the fact that certain motherboards likem certain motherboards. Trust me on this. If you have a DFI board, I reonmned OCZ memory and ONLY ocz memory. Period. It is the only way to GUARENTEE 100% compaitablility and great overclock with a DFI board. Want an example:

Twinmos CH-5 Stick of 512mb ram. Doesn't work period in DFI Ultra-D. Runs great in two otehr systems.

OCZ Gold BH-5 1gb kit. Works like a charm in same DFI board. Their are no differences in timings between these two chips, only voltage differences when overclocking. Granted, I am using a newer bios with the OCZ than when I was trying the twinmos, but I can almost bet if I stuck that twinmos stick back in here with the old processor it wouldn't work. Not sure about with the new processor (which I just traded with a friend, 6 months after I got my new ram).

Basically JMO, but if you have a DFI board, buy OCZ ram (the G.Skill stuff should be good to, but their is limited tech support if you have a problem).

The Gskillz are so cheap on newegg right now and so good that its worth justifying them over value ram.

Strange, isn't a 1:1 ratio with a Opty/PC4000 setup be better than any other at a different divider?

JSFLY,

Are you talking about the DDR500 GSkillz that I had listed. I had three GSkillz sets up there, and I'm not skilled enough to know intuitively to which you were referring . . .

Get the GSKILL ones with black heatspreaders. Don't have to go with the OCZ XTC Gold. IMO the GSKILLs are great bang for the buck. 157 for OCing mem capable of running 1:1 on most OCs? Hell yes...
