I have a shuttle coming with an Opty 148 in it (3.0 GHZ, but single core)

I'm thinking I want Dual core, and I Have a good lead on a 3800 x2 (2.0 GHZ)

which is a better proc for multitasking? is it worth taking the hit on GHZ for the extra core?

both will be used with 2gb ram if that matters

For multitasking, absolutely.

You have not yet received the Opty 148 @ 3 GHz? It's going to run at 3 GHz for sure? Because 146s were all the hype as well for 2.8 GHz-3.0 GHz easily, but mine is only stable up to 2.5 GHz at 1.45 V. Just wondering if you are guaranteed 3.0 GHz or not from it. Because it is likely a 3800 or Opty 165 (or even something like a X2 4400 which Tigerdirect had for about $150 AR) will overclock some to say 2.5 GHz. Not as high as a 148 probably, but that would narrow the difference to where even multitasking aside, the dual core would be quite close just in clock speed.

Some posts are a tough decision to upgrade to X2 since gaming is more of a priority and multitasking very little. I'm in that boat, so it's tough to justify the cost for dual core 939. But yours seems much more clear cut.

I think he has it now, duragezic.

It'll probably be worth it, especially if you get one that overclocks well. Mine hits 2.5GHz at an acceptable voltage, runs great. I think the second core would more than offset the speed difference for multitasking.
