Opty 148 or Opty 175???

I've been running this Opty 148 in a DFI expert for about 6 months now. No problems, OC's great. However, I just couldn't pass up a great deal on an Opty 175 last week for $230. The chips have the same stock speed (2.2GHz), just that the 175 has 2. My question is, do I keep the 148 in my main machine and save the 175 for an as yet unbuilt HTPC, or pop the 175 in and see what it can do?? The only thing keeping me from doing it right away is that the 175's supposedly don't OC real well (~2.5-2.6). Machine is mostly for gaming (BF2, Q4, some RTSs). Any first hand experience with the 175s would be great too.

Either way your game is going to be GPU limited. However the 148 is going to be faster at single threaded things sure. However Windows likes to have random junk running in the background that periodically cause slowdowns. In that case, the Dual core can offload the random things to one core, keep dedicating your other core to the game, and in the end it will be faster.

If the game is multi-threaded, it will be no contest, but few games are at this point. I still think the advantage of having a spare core to handle the extra things windows likes to throw (which tends to happen alot) is more than enough to justify a 2-300 mhz drop in core speed.

I would go with the dual-core. Even if it is a bad overclocker it is likely that you can get it up to 2.5Ghz or so. The second core will provide more benefit with multitasking and hopefully extend the life of the system as more multithreaded software is released.

I was kind of leaning towards the 175 anyway. Anyone that has any OC experience with that chip??

dual core all the way, it's just nice to have (you never know what you might be doing on the computer 6 months from now).
And the X2's overclock just as good as the opterons so if you can pick up a X2 that'll be fine also.

ALSO, the 11x multi isn't worth the money. Get a 170 or an X2 if you can.
(I got a sh!t stepping with my Opty, so YMMV)

Too late, already have the 175. It was only ~$20 more than the 170 and I'm used to the 11x from my 148. I like it because it lets me run my RAM at it's stock 250 without using a divider.

Same here.
I'm have it running at 250x11 because of my ram.
So nice and fast :)

Hope and prey you got a good stepping.

I'd be happy with 250x11.
