Hey Fellow AT'ers,

I just wanted to take a poll as to which of these Dual 8X DVD burners, the OptoRite DD0401 or the BTC DRW 1008IM was the best choice. I was going to buy one of these bad boys, but am not sure as to which one, since both have postings of problems with burning to media and general quality issues. I am hoping our great legion of AT people with their knowlegable and vast experiences can help me with my decision. :)

Thanks in advance,

You may want to go with......Neither. Newegg.com has the NEC 8X drive right now for ~120. It is a MUCH better drive but of course is an OEM edition (no cables or software) and costs 20 more.

Go with the NEC. It seems to get the most positive feedback across the board.

I had the Optorite and it would not burn a thing. It must have been defective - it would not burn any of the media I tried: Princo DVD-R, Phillips DVD+RW, Sony CD-R, Memorex CD-RW, TDK CD-RW. It was a very frsutrating experience. Some people swear by optorite, but I'm steering clear from now on.

I'm in the same boat as you, as I have bought one of each and trying to determine which to keep.

Here is what I have heard about Optorite DD0401:

1.) Will allow you to use 'some' 4x +R media and let you write at 8x...
2.) There will be new firmware that is coming out to up the -R from 4x --> 8x
3.) HD-BURN capabilities... can't read in many other drives, but still 1.4 gig on cdr is nice since cdr disks are generally cheap.

I have the Optorite DD0203 and despite I can't seem to burn any HD-BURN disks, I have been able to write at 4x for -R and +R just fine, since upgrading to the latest firmware for that drive.

I'm not trying to get off the topic, but just letting you know what I have found. I did have a bad notion for Optorite in the beginning with the older firmware, but since the update, no coasters have been made and I am using both TDK and some 'Optimum' brand that was FAR at Staples a few months ago... all work fine in all players but my mother's, however, I think it is the player, and not the disc.

Hopefully someone will post a determined answer to this concern as there is only 12 days left for me to return the drive.

phillydog,

Thanks for the info. It's beginning to look as if the OptoRite might be the better choice between the 2. But can anyone else offer their opinions and experiences?

Thanks,

Hope this helps

Optorite

BTC

Thanks for the links... basically, both drives have about the same ratings, althought the Optorite is a bit higher... other than that, specs for the drive look to be identical. I think I will keep the Optorite drive since it looks cooler on the outside and can do HD-BURN.

I had the same choice to make since I got a BTC from Staples deal.

After looking at the reviews and stuff and also weighing in on the 8x NEC and 8x TDK (rebadged Plextor), I returned the I/O Magic and decided to go with the rebadged Plextor.

I went with quality over price.

Slomover,

Thanks for the links to the reviews.

nycdude,

Great choice. I wish I could afford to get that one too. ;-)
