Optorite DD0203/Optorite DD0201 won't rip faster than 4x

I bought a Pacific Digital DVD+/-RW drive from Staples last week. Referencing my serial and model numbers in this thread, I have an Optorite drive. In the review, my drive does not look like that, however. I have two buttons on the right that are angled 45 degrees to the left and one light.

Using SmartRipper and DVDDecrypter, the drive maxes out @ 4.3x or 5995 K/sec. I know that read speeds will not hit the max 12x on dual layer discs, but 4x seems like it's just a cap. Is there a way to verify that I indeed have an Optorite drive, and are there firmwares that break this apparent cap on read speed?

Bump, now even slower! I ripped Austin Powers 2 tonight and couldn't break 3,000 K/sec. What the hell is wrong with this drive?

I have an Optorite 0201 and use DVD Shrink 3.17. I'm not sure what the rip speed is but it takes roughly 12-15 min to reauthor a ~4GB movie.

That's plenty quick. I'm guessing 6-8x, which is fairly common for dual layer discs.

Is it possible I have a different drive? How can I tell?

Look in the Device Manager under DVD/CD-ROM Drives and you should see the Optorite model #.

** BTW I use the 2.50 firmware

Can you tell me how you flashed to the new firmware? I have the same drive but it tells me i need to do it in dos mode and i use xp. Do i boot and press f2 or f8 to get into a dos mode then flash it? or boot from floppy? suggestions please because i really want to update my firmware..

oh and btw... i have the same drive as you but i havent ripped any yet. dvd media is expensive and i wont be able to get any until this weekend when i work all weekend. so monday at best before i burn a movie...

The drive is listed as a GENERIC DVD DUAL 4XMax. There are no signs of a firmware version in device manager either.

Do you have DMA enabled for the drive? Also, have you done any benchmarking with say CD Speed to see if its an issue with the drive and/or ripping software?

DMA is enabled, yes. I'll give CD speed a chance tonight.

Is there a util that will tell me the manufacturer of the drive?
