It seems the spec are exactly the same, being the DD0203 the conservative look drive, and the DD0201 the one with the most "modern" look.... Optorite's site has the pictures.

I could swear I answered this post... Cross-post maybe? Anyhow, there is no difference. They are the same drive with a different bezel.

My old scsi burner just died and I was researching the issue.

It does look liek tis the same sanyo oem drive with different bezels.

However! They use different firmwares, and using the wrong firmware seems to break certain drives and have no effect on others.

This points to SOME sort of difference between the 0201 and 0203.

I just don't klnow what :(

I was just up on the Optorite site yesterday and asked what the difference between the two drives was. This is the reply they sent.

Hello,

There are a few differences with the DD0201 and DD0203 drives.

1. The CD Loading Tray mechanism for the drive is different.

2. The DD0201 drive has two buttons (play/forward fast and eject) while the DD0203 drive has only one button (an eject button).

3. The DD0201 drive has one LED light (for read/write) while the DD0203 drive has two LEDs (one for read and write).

4. Because of the difference in 1, 2, and 3, the firmware for the DD0201 and DD0203 drives are different. Thus, the firmware for the DD0201 drive will not work for the DD0203 drive and vice versa.

Both drives have the same features, CD-R/CD-RW, DVD+R/+RW, DVD-R/-RW, and HD-Burn. The DD0201 drive has a bit more style to it then the DD0203 drive. The DD0201 model is newer.

Thank you,
OptoRite Support

Hey, I'm thinking about buying one of these. If I did, I was wondering, I think I might scrap my CD burner and/or my DVD-ROM. How much of a decrease would I see from going from 52x24x52x16-->24x10x40x12(or would the Optorite D0401 be better as with 40x24x40x12)? Also do they sell these in black? What about the Optorite DD0401 is that gonna be the major replacement soon? I don't see any for sale...

I know Newegg.com carries the black faced DD0203 and DD0201 since that is what I'm looking at.

As to which drive would be better to remove it depends on what you will be using the new drive for. If you are going to copy DVDs it would be better to keep the DVD player. If you are going to use the recorder for data etc it would be better to keep the CDRW drive. I'm planning on using the burner for time shifting TV programs so will probably keep the CDRW in my drive
