OPTORITE D0203 or NEC 1300a?

Thr NEC is a good drive with much more support than the Oporite. I am about to get the NEC 1300a and I have been researching DVD drives for about 2 weeks now and for the money the NEC is the one to get. You can get the NEC at Livewirehouse for 125 shipped.

The NEC can be had for $113 now, which is a far cry lower than the optowrite (search hot deals). I think you will find a lot of Optowrite fanboys here since there was a hot deal running on it all last month and a lot of people bought it so be careful about he reviews you get here.

I've been sweating this decision for weeks now, and happily watching prices go down at the same time. From reviewing a lot of posts on a lot of forums people seem to be most in love with the pioneer models.

nec1300, sony510 and plextor708 or 504a seem to be next and in about that order in people's hearts, but really pretty close to tied.

optorite has the HD burn thing going for it and of course everybody always swears by liteon, but there seems to be less fervency about the liteon dvd burner.

my decision: still thinking about it....

I was examining these two drives and decided on the 1300A. I've had it for almost a month now and it has worked flawlessly using Imation +R's.

Fanboys, really? Like everyone has said, either way you'll have a good drive. I have not had a single problem with my Optorite. If you can get the NEC for cheaper, go for it.

Ok, I'm driving myself crazy here trying to decide which one to get.....I must say that I like the 8MB buffer, the H-D feature, and the retail box (with the software included) idea of the Optorite better than the 2MB buffer, OEM idea of the 1300a. I also don't have much trust in Livewarehouse. Looks like the best vendor to get the Optorite from would be AccuPC. Shipped the black Optorite is $139.00.....at Livewarehouse it is $122.00.....Decisions decisions.....Help me out here!

Ahhh, that's the other thing....I'm looking at the DD0201 (the newer style Optorite that comes with Nero). Not sure what else is different though. Anyone know the difference between the DD0201 & the DD0203? Maybe they worked some of the early glitches out of the 1st version?

Seems as if they have different firmware and a different buffer size as well. So it can't just be a faceplate upgrade.

Anyone own the DD0201 version?!!?

what is the cheapest Drive that comes with good burning software? Oh I need a black one too if possible

with the liteon at newegg you get your choice of either black or software. both versions 109$

In the October issue of CPU Magazine they have a 3 way shootout between a Verbatim (rebadged NEC 1300A), Pioneer DVR 106, and a Sony DRU 510A, with the NEC winning overall....

I recently got the Optorite DD0203 for $139 shipped from Newegg. It has Nero, some software by B, and another title I can't remember at the moment (I'm at work). This was the retail version, black. I've burned a couple things, and I live the drive so far. I had to do a firmware update (as one should any time a new burner is purchased anyhow, IMO) to get Nero to see the full 8MB buffer correctly. I also found a helpful list of good media choices for the drive here. Really though, I think you can't go wrong wither either. Buy what's less expensive I guess.
