they don't usually have scheduled maintenance in the 4-5 years I was with them (I switched out this month finally). Their uptime was remarkable, at least for Long Island. Never heard of scheduled downtime... let alone downtime at all. But I'm so glad Verizon FIOS is invading LI. Double the speed for $5 more. 😀
yes we have 10Mb/1Mb but they cap your upload if you keep it running stuff all the time. That got to me after calling 3 times to have it uncapped... I do a lot of multimedia web stuff and I can't have 128kbps up speeds (after being capped). Otherwise their speed is good if you use it for spurts. I don't like the fact that they advertise one thing but don't let us always use it... even for legit stuff.Originally posted by: tami

you don't have 10mbit in long island?
i'm impressed by the speed, and i had a 21 day uptime until last night.
i called optonline about it and i the person i spoke to was a real airhead. she had no response to "i hope they don't have any more outages like this."
no it is 10/1 on LI also. Even if you get capped, it is 10Mb/150kbps max (they only limit the up side). Verizon FIOS is 15/2 for $50/mo... and your very own fiber line to abuse as your heart desires  I'll get mine in 6 months.Originally posted by: Qwest
i believe Long Island and NJ have different speeds.
i'm in NJ and have 10 down, 1 up while my friends in LI have 5 down, 1 up (no, they're not capped)
good question about port 80 on VOL... I haven't tried to run a webserver for a few years (OOL used to not care) so I don't have any webserver software installed to try (not even IIS). I know OOL has gone to a "no server" policy so even FTP/SMTP are out for you.Originally posted by: tami
bronx now.
does verizon let you run a webserver on port 80? i hate how optonline doesn't. when i had time warner, i had no problem doing so.
pros and cons are annoying.
