Optirite DD-201 DVD will not burn any CD or DVD

I bought the 4x Pacific Digital DVD drive from Staples. The I received is an Optorite DD-201. After I got around to installing the thing, I tried to burn a DVD data disk with Nero. The drive just stays on and after awhile, Nero come up the error "Power Calibration Error". It will not burn. I then tried to burn a regular CD-R in this burner with Nero. With the CD-R, Nero comes up with "Focus or Tracking Error". Reading a CD, I have about a 50% chance that it will read a CD without locking up.

I think it is a bad drive (Optorite DD-201 frimware 2.6). It is seen by WindowsME fine and the LiteOn CD burner works fine. Anyone have any idea about what could be wrong?

The worst thing is Staples will not exchange the drive because I sent in the UPC from the box for the rebate. The only thing I can hope for at this point is that Pacific Digital has a good RMA program unless someone has something I can try to get this thing burning.

is it within 30 days? In that case, Staples MUST take it back (see their exact policy, but I remember they had 30 days return), otherwise you can make a fuss: call the manager, the BBB etc. The coupon thing is not your concern, since Staples themselves advertise the drive at alow price, adding in small letters the difference represented by the mail-in rebate.

So my advice: make a fuss about it, they`re bound to take it back.

Since this is a retail product, Staples has to return the bad drive in original box (uncut) to their supplier or the manufacturer for replacement.

The rebate coupon states that you should try the product first and make sure it works before cut out the upc to send for rebate processing.

If Staples doesn't accept your return, the last solution is to ask help from credit card company if you paid by credit card.

errr.. what does how they advertise it really matter here? Staples (as does every other retail store) explciity states that if you destroy packaging, you cannot return it. It's a huge liablity issue. Hell, some things you buy now specifically state "DO NOT RETURN TO STORE" but to contact their support first (sony comes to mind for some things...).

Anyway, have you tried slapping it in another computer to see if it exhibits the same things? Have you tried it on it's own channel?

It is Nero ver 5 something. I even tried the newest ver 5 that Nero has out.

I called Pacific Digital and they gave me a new firmware to try, which I had already done. After that it was RMA time. The tech asked me three or four times were I bought the drive from and that I should take it back there for a replacement. I told him about the problem with Staples and he wanted to make sure an RMA is what I wanted as it will take a long time. I told him I have no choice but to RMA the thing because Staples will do nothing.

Pacific Digital was easy to call and no waiting on the phone but the RMA turn around time is lookig to be about three to four weeks before I get another drive. I have about had it with rebates. Staples has about the quickest return on rebates but this just left a sour taste for me. Also, Staples only has a 14 day return on tech products.
