Optiplex GX150 USB problems

I've had about 50 gx150s for 3yrs. I'm running Win98SE.

I just plugged a Canon USB scanner into one of them and it scanned incredibly slow. I then tried an HP USB scanner with the same result and finally a MS USB mouse had terrible response time. I tried the same thing on another gx150 with the same results. I downloaded the only version of chipset drivers available on the Dell website for the GX150 and the only version on the 815 drives in the Intel website and neither solved the problem. I then tried to do a fresh install of windows thinking my workstation image might be the problem again I got the same results. What is going on here? Is there a known issue with the 82815 chipset and USB? Any suggestions? I'm totally stumped.

Thanks.

Maybe you're just expecting too much of USB 1? How about slap a PCI USB card in there for the purpose of hosting your scanners, at least.

best idea..as you could also get the USB 2.0 card or a combo card that has firewire as well as RJ-45(Realtek 8139 chip) all on pci card..goodluck :) <edit>typos

Please read my post. This is a computer lab with 50 PCs. I'm not going to by 50 USB 2 cards. I don't need USB2. I just need USB1.1 to work like it should.

I did read your post. You didn't say you had 50 scanners, nor that you needed all 50 systems to work with the two scanners you've mentioned so far. :p But it sounds like that's the case? So try giving Dell a call and see if they have some advice to offer. By now they must've heard of this one.

Bigger picture: a computer lab with Win98 systems :Q

Even Bigger picture: a school district with limited funds. Our district is almost exclusively 98 right now. Many other districts around ae the same and worse. Some still have 95 around. I'd bet that's pretty standard across the board for schools.

I don't have 50 scanners but I'd like to resolve the problem that net time I plug in a USB device it works.

I think there was a windows update for USB under 98. Give that a try. If not, you might have better luck in the dell forums.
