options for waterproof dslr?

I saw your title, and I immediately came in to respond with the AW1.

The only other options I've seen are as you describe - expensive housings.

hmmmm. reading more on that aw1, water leakage occurred to many people. most of the them recommends getting the Nikon 3780 1 WP-N3 Waterproof Case and the mirrorless Nikon J4 or S2.
another option is the Sony RX100 cam + around $200 for the waterproof case. but thats stepping into the P/S cam territory.

Well, the Nikons are arguably using the same sensor as the RX100--- they're all 1" sensors.

In my mind, a DSLR equates to large sensor and removable lenses; really depends on how much you want to spend and what quality you're after.

A friend of mine bought a TG-4 from Olympus' site as a refurb for $299; he's been very happy with it. You might keep your eyes open for that.
