I drive a 2003 Chevy Impala. I've have it for 5 years and put roughly 60k of my own miles on it. Right now it is a little over 136k. I've always taken good care of the mechanical side of it but I noticed something yesterday after a car wash. The exterior is getting rough in spots. There are things I would do differently if I could. I never gave the exterior the attention it really deserved.

After this last Michigan weather I noticed a bad spot forming on the trunk.

As you can see the darker spot has been there for a couple of months and the lighter color spot just appeared after a car wash yesterday. It seems this is going to keep getting worse.

Here is a link to the rest of the photos. I started at the drivers side front and did a walk around to take some pictures of some other damage.

The car runs great and it has been paid off for some time. I have no plans of getting rid of it any time soon.

Looking at some of the spots I'm thinking they will need a little more attention than just touch up paint. If it were your car would you invest any money in painting an 8 year old car?

Looks like your paint is coming off of either the primer or (more likely) a galvanized/coated layer on the body. This is not uncommon. I would sand, prime, and touch up the rusting patches, and just clean and touch up the flaking spots. No sense in going nuts over some minor paint repair on an old car unless you REALLY care about how it looks. Simple aerosol primer and touch-up paint would probably be fine.

Sand and blend some primer + paint in. I did a rattle can job on my old 98 Cavvy (had the same problem as your's) and it turned out very well (don't yell about the bubbling tint - next thing to be fixed) :
