Trying to decide on which to buy. Looking to upgrade my digi cam. Have had a olympus d40 for awhile. Its a good cam, just big and bulky and eats batteries.

Really looking at something that is:

Compact
Good battery life
Quick - I want the time from when i press the button to it actually taking the picture to be as fast as possible
Multishot - I also want something that can take rapid fire shots so i don't miss those important moments.

anyone have any luck with either of these cameras? or can recommend me something else that would fit my criteria?

Thanks!

Casio Exilim Z4
Pentax Optio S4
Olympus D40

Dosen't it say somewhere in that review that they are the same camera with slightly different casings??

I know I read that somewhere and thought it was on that site..

The Z4 is basically the same camera as the S4i, not the S4. Notice the larger LCD and other upgrades (and the z4 has the dock). That said, you can't go wrong with either, IMO. I have an S4 and love it.

I've had the S4i for a week or two. It's the bomb for "OMG gotta take a pic of that". Yeah, some people like camera phones for that stuff, but I prefer a real camera for such things. I got a nice little belt-loop soft case for it, so it goes everywhere I go. The toughest part about that is remembering it's on when I loosen my belt. :D

Sample pic

Edit: typo. Also, battery life seems pretty good.

When I get home I'll post some S4 sample pics as well. You guys can also look at the sample pics from Steve's Digicams in the links in the OP.

I have an Optio S4 and love it. Here's a sample pic from a few weeks ago (downsampled from 1600x1200 to 1024x768):

Pentax Optio S4i

Thanks for all the input. Looking at the S4i now, looks pretty nice.

Now, is anyone able to tell me the pros and cons of the media cards.

"SD memory cards and Multimedia cards"

I'm afraid I am super clueless when it comes to memory cards.

SD is a faster version of MMC with security features. Other than that, they are the same size, fit in the same slot, etc.

in terms of pricing, a 256 mb SD goes for about 60 right now :)

Actually, you can get 256MB of SD for $35 after rebate at ecost. Hurry, though, the offer expires May 7. I'm sending my rebate out this morning, as it turns out.

I have the S4 also--no complaints here.
Actually 1 complaint. I wish I could find a nice case for it that doesn't add much extra bulk.
Then I can take it out of this damn Altoids box.

Edit:

Compact - very compact.
Battery Life - proprietary battery :(, but good life.
Quick - Decent speed, but startup is a bit slow for me
Multishot - Decent continuous shot

I chose the Optio over the Exilim because of price. I was able to get in on the Walmart bundle with rebate and discounted Giftcard (from eb@y). Camera + tripod + bulky case + 128megs = ~$200.
