I thought these things had been worked out with newer motherboards and Windows....
I just upgraded my hard drive on a 2-3 year old motherboard with ATA-66. The hard drive came with an Ultra ATA 100 card. When I tried to use the controller for my system partition, I was getting a stutter... every 2-3 seconds the system would hang for a brief moment. After many problems with transferring data to a new drive (another story...), Western Digital suggested that I move the controller card to a different slot. I have an AGP for video, 5 PCI and one ISA (useless now...). He suggested 1 and 3 are shared, and recommended I put the card in slot 2, 4, or 5. My audio card was already in 2, and my NIC was in 4, so I moved it to 5, and it did seem to improve enough to make it useable. I was a little surprised, because I thought Windows XP was overriding my motherboard settings for PCI placement anyway.
I've noticed two other threads asking specifically which slots are shared. I was wondering if anyone knows anything more about sharing the PCI bus in general: Is what I experienced, especially the slight "stutter" at all common? I know I had terrible problems with Creative Labs products (Encore, Live!) and PCI slots in the past. Is there an optimum placement of certain types of devices on certain PCI slots? I've heard that the lower numbered slots have a higher priority for processing than the higher numbered slots. I've also heard that slot 1 should not really be used for anything if you use the AGP slot for video. I would otherwise have thought I should put an ATA contoller on one of the higher priority slots like 1, 2, or 3, and that an NIC card or something similar would go in the lower priority slots. Any ideas or recommendations?
