Optimum ram

Hello.

I just ordered the ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe. Is Corsair XMS Extreme Memory Speed Series 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-3200 - OEM approprite? Is there a better chioce? 1x512? 2x256? 1x256+1x512? 2x512? I want to play new games and multitask, surf, burn video, record TV.

That'll work and if tight on funds I would get a 512 stick now and add a 512 later or 2X512 if not.

Yes, you won't be missing much by using single channel over dual channel.

A7N8X only has 3 slots. You could go 2x256 and 1x512 and still go dual channel, but that's silly to do when you're buying all new RAM.

Okay, that said, and thank you all...What brand and type is the preferred choice? Corsair seems to be very popular. I want great quality but dont want to be excessive about it. Whats a quality, practical variety?

The main benefit of getting 3500 ram is overclocking. If your overclocking by increasing the fsb, then having ram that supports higher ammounts means you only have to worry about your cpu and not how far your ram will go.

If you're trying to take to 3200+, you can use PC3200 without overclocking the RAM. If you think you can take it higher than XP3200+, then you may need PC3500+. I personally bought 2x512MB PC3200 Kingston ValueRAM running dual channel on my A7N8X-Deluxe.

eshtogMost cases no because it limits your upgradability. It's always good to leave as many slots open as possible for the future in case we start needing more than 1GB of RAM. nForce 2 boards that have 4 slots tend to have problems using all 4 slots, that's why most nForce 2 boards have 3 slots. In the P4 case with dual-channel boards, 4x256 is slightly faster than 2x512. But the difference is minimal and isn't worth the tradeoff of using so many slots.
