so, I've been super excited about getting 20m fios in my new apartment that I'm moving into this weekend, but today, my landlord hit me with kind of a bomb when I mentioned that I was planning on getting fios and said that he doesn't want verizon in the building, under any circumstances (something about removing copper, installing a new box on the outside of the house, etc, etc).

so I'm left with either optimum or getting out of the lease.

anyone with optimum have any feedback to share? how comparable to fios is it in terms of pricing and speed? I'm still looking into the different packages availible, but I'm interested in any experiences anyone has to share :)

my original plan was to go with fios tv/internet, with a dual-tuner HD dvr and the standard 200 channel line-up (no hbo or showtime) for like $100/month. hopefully optimum offers something similar since I already canceled my tivo service, even after they offered to lower my monthly rate to $6/month :(

Just say you thought he was joking because nobody could be that irrational.

Why don't you want Optimum Online? AFAIK, it's still one of the highest rated high speed services out there. Heck, I'd choose Opt. Online over FIOS if given a choice.

I was thinking that the OP was being irrational.

My experience with OO has been rather bad. Outages are frequent, they throttled my upstream bandwidth to 20kbps, and after being hounded for months finally unchained me - but they still would not admit that they had throttled me. The TV signal was bad and they sent a tech out who suggested I get 2 ~$20 boosters for the upstairs where the signal was weakest. This helped for a while but it eventually got even worse. They sent another tech out who said I should never have gotten them. He put an amplifier on the line in the basement, now whenever the (voip) phone rings I get disconnected from the internet >.>

If I could get DSL or FIOS in my area, I would in a heartbeat. I'd suggest calling Verizon and finding out just what fios entails. I get the impression the landlord is probably going on hearsay.

a little bit, I just kinda feel like I might be getting screwed over... and if he's being irrational about fios, who knows what's next.

I'd rather break the lease while I'm still in the middle of moving in than have it broken for me when I'm already settled. something to sleep on, I guess.

I don't think Verizon can tear your copper out anymore when installing FiOS. I'd check with Verizon and get some dirty technical details (e.g. what the entire installation entails), and then present a good case for your landlord.

I love my Boost service with Optimum Online. Regular OOL might not be worth it.

Optimum is currently lifting their download speed caps and I've used their voice service for 2 years now with no problems. My own modem been uncapped for a while now, but I can't seem to break 3600k/s...lol. Some users are getting up to 4100k/s...

Also, boost users are [so far] immune to the upload caps that affect heavy uploaders. I've left my torrents full blast (5-600k/s] for a week with no issues on Boost.

I wouldn't go from Boost - FIOS for anything. OOL HDTV looks great also, but I've only compared it to the crappy Time Warner Cable HD in Manhattan.

Shoot...why don't you try to get FIOS anyway? You already signed the contact? Did it say anything about NOT getting Verizon? Does Verizon need permission from the landlord to install anything? If not...then just get it...

I bit the bullet and went with optimum, though amazingly enough, I ran into a verizon girl last night while moving boxes in who was walking down the block to let everyone know that fios was available ;)

glad I called optimum over the phone, though. the CS rep gave me a dual-tuner hddvr free for a year and three months of speed boost free, so the price/performance should be about even, theoretically. sucks that I won't have internet at my house till the 12th, though. there's not even an open wifi connection to steal :(

If your VoIP calls are causing the modem to bomb out, I'd just swap the modem out. I was a cable installer for 5 years (Level 3 PC tech for 3 years, installer for last 2) and almost every single time I've seeen this happen, it was a bad modem.

Amplifiers in general are bad. I bet I could re-wire your house and you wouldn't need a single amp anywhere...lol. I think I've only installed two in my whole 5 years of cable, and one was for an apt downtown with 7 HD boxes.

As for the capping, I'd look into boost if you can stomach another 10 dollars to your bill. 3000k/s download isn't bad, and you can upload as much as you want without fear of caps.

Ive had OOL since it launched almost 10 yrs ago... It was bad in the beginning, but for the past 5+ years it has been nothing short of great. I wouldnt switch to Verizon for anything.

Their CSR's can be a pain sometimes, but you shouldnt have a need to call them too much unless your bill gets screwed up.

They have the triple play (internet, tv, phone) for $90 or something like that. And you wont pay the crazy taxes that Verizon charges.

Plus, the optimum HDTV is unbelievable when compared to DirecTV or Dish... I dont know about Fios havent seen it yet.

IMO, Your landlord is doing you a favor.
