I was just browsing around on my frazierwall based firewall box that I've setup for my LAN. I'm running an RR 3com cable modem. In games my ping seems to fluctuate randomly and my download speed starts out at a good pace (about 150-200k/sec) and then sharply drops off to about 50k/sec. Is this normal for a cable modem? I'm quoting all of these speeds at off peak times, which is supposedly when cable is fastest. I have also read that there are filters on the cable line outside my house that might need to be replaced? Is there any truth to this?
