I haven't built a computer in a quite a few years and a friend is wanting to get one for gaming and something that's "future proof" for ~3-4 years. He priced out a bunch of stuff (not sure exactly where) and had assembled this. What I wanted to do was to run by you guys if there would be instances of cpu/gpu/ram bottlenecking and if there were certain parts you'd recommend over those that are currently chosen.

Ideally the price would come down from what it's at, but not necessary. I suggested getting a BR-drive instead of a dvd-rw, more ram, and maybe a cheaper case, but that's just personal preference.

Thanks for helping out!

-----------

ASUS DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS Black SATA 24X DVD Burner - Bulk - OEM $22.99

ASUS VW246H Glossy Black 24" 2ms(GTG) HDMI Widescreen LCD Monitor $219.99

ASRock M3A770DE AM3 AMD 770 ATX AMD Motherboard $59.99

EVGA 01G-P3-1465-AR GeForce GTX 465 (Fermi) 1GB 256-bit $229.99
GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card

Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound $9.99

AMD Phenom II X6 1055T Thuban 2.8GHz Socket AM3 125W $199.99
Six-Core Desktop Processor HDT55TFBGRBOX

ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 64 Pro 92mm Ceramic CPU Cooler $29.99

Antec Nine Hundred Two Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case $192.94

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
(PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL

CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready $144.98
80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply

SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5"
Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive

Total cost right here is 1,110.85. However have 10% GPU so -$23 and $35 in mail in rebate cards +$16 for shipping = just under $1,070 for the entire set up. Only thing I don’t have here is speakers and keyboard/mouse.

"Future-proof" ain't happening on any budget.

The only major problem that I see with that build is the GTX 465. The GTX 460 1GB is about $10 cheaper, cooler, quieter, less power-hungry, and faster in many games (who cares about Battleforge anyway?) The 465 is an abortion of a card that Nvdia rushed out right after Fermi's launch because they didn't have anything to compete in the ~$200 space. It was only intended as a stop-gap solution until the 460 came out.

EDIT: Oh and don't forget a Windows 7 license.

might wanna consider one of the 800 series motherboards as they're supposed to have support for bulldozer, amd's next generation of cpu's. i dont think the 700 series will...i'm not certain on that though. considering this is a major cpu architecture overhaul, it'd be worth preparing for since he wants to keep this thing for a few years. imho it'd be better to get a phenom ii x4 and an 800 series board, or possibly even an athlon ii x4. as mfenn mentioned future proofing isn't gonna happen, but you can at least make the transition as easy and cost-effective as possible. on that note, it might be worthwhile to step down to a radeon 5770 or possibly 5750 and wait for another generation or two of gpu's to come out (whenever it feels obsolete) and use some of that saved cash to get a new gpu at that point. these suggestions will save your friend some money now, cost a tad more in the long run, but in the end he'll have a consistently more capable system.

also you can knock quite a bit off of the cost there by going with an antec 300 and a cheaper psu. for the parts you listed there, the case and psu you listed are overkill.

that looks like a good deal...not sure where you're getting those prices, the antec nine hundred two is $120 + $10 shipping on newegg and the PSU you listed is $90 with $2 shipping plus a $10 MIR after that...still, the combo i posted is cheaper. keyboard/mouse/speakers is really up to preference. he should consider headphones unless he really wants speakers, you get a lot better bang for your buck with headphones.
