optimize lan speed?

i connected my PC to another one using CAT6 cabling, both NICs are Gigabit NICs and both are set to 1000 Full Duplex and show that they're connected at 1Gbit.

But when i copy a file (xp ---> vista) Dumeter on that NIC shows me only 11mBit/sec?

Any way to optimize this?

G.

In my experience the network stack in vista is a mess and SMB doesn't help (it's not exactly the best file transfer protocol (FTP 😉 ). boot a live CD of linux on both machines and see if you get better speeds. Also if you are using any client side firewalls try disabling them, that can significantly affect network speeds.

ok....i got it at 60mB/sec now using the jumbo-frame settings...i think i also had it on the wrong NIC with the other tests.

what spidey said...1000Base-T negotiates more than just speed / duplex, but pairing, master/slave, etc.

this test means nothing if the switch you connect them to doesnt support jumbo frames as well.

he's doing nic to nic. my guess would be a flow control problem or bad drivers. But the rule of thumb still applies - don't hard set speed/duplex for 1000 Base-T because other things are negotiated besides speed/duplex like 100 Base-T was.

And I have yet to see any problems with autonegotiation with 1000 Base-T like there used to be WAY back with 100 Base-T.

i have both NICs now on auto negotiation and i get 45mB/s filecopying through microsoft networking.
..is this about right or should it be higher?

Also..not sure about the options like TX/RX handshaking and whatever i have there, IRQ moderation etc..etc..lots of options. Jumbo frames i have on both NICs now at 9000.

45MB/sec. B=Byte is above the average of Giga on Client OS.
