Optimal viewing distance?

I have a 52" 1080P tv and I'm trying to figure out how far I should sit for an optimal picture. Some places I've seen as low as 5 ft, others as high as 13.5 ft.

Thanks.

THX recommends 5-7 feet

however IMO thats too damn close to sit to a TV i sit like 10 from my 50

Yeah that seems like it depends on who you talk to. I'm 5-7 from a 42 and its a little too big. if you are always scanning the screen searching for what to look at - its too close.

With 20/20 vision (natural or corrected), you will be able to discern the 1080 lines of resolution at 1.5X the screen width for a 16:9 aspect screen. Your screen is approximately 45.32" wide so 5.66 feet is the threshold.

This is based on the one arc-second rule of human visual acuity. Sitting closer and you will see gaps between the pixels, but sitting farther back your eyes will resolve less of those pixels--making your purchase a moot point to begin width.
