Optical USB mouse with PS/2 adapter need power?

So I am trying to set up this old 486 DX/100 for some old games. I've gotten everything going except the mouse.

Of course, the only two mice I have are both optical USB mice. So I hooked up the PS/2 adapter and tried to use it but windows tells me no mouse could be found.

So, is the problem that a USB mouse with a PS/2 adapter won't work on a system that old or is the PS/2 port bad.

Basically I am trying to figure out if I need a regular ps/2 mouse or if I need to search out an old COM port mouse

Mice have to be designed for both usb and ps/2, yours must be usb only. The adapter wont help. Youll need to buy a mouse that supports both.

i heard of ur mouse you should use usb since its better, but for sumthing like a keyboard i would think doesnt matter.
