optical output of audigy

If it has optical IN, yes you can, I don't think any do though (unless they're component systems). Portable minidisc recorders are usually the only portable devices with optical in. Reciever's have them as well.

Not even the audigy can output to an MD player. you need a ForissimoII to do that. You see, MD players use TOS links. Thus, optical out on an audigy I think, is incompatible. Any one care to tell me how to output from Audigy to TOS link Optical in?

Heh.. anyways.. just get a Com port to USB adapter and transfer via that method if you're still stuck on COM. if you used optical out you'd have to record in real time i.e. 1X. Being stuck on 1X, which i'm used to, is extremley aggrivating.

Since when the SB cards with optical outputs cannot be used with MD recorders?? This house has 3 MD recorders and it works with the Live and Audigy.

How is it done? Simple, the Livedrive 2 on the Sb live can be used and the Audigy has a separate break out box like the live drive 2 too. They have both optical output and input on it.

Uh, Pillage my buddy, if you're really willing to spend 60$ for an I/O card for my audigy or 90$ for a live drive... be my guest. The SB cards, in stock form, aren't capable of outputting a TOS signal. And I was brutally shocked when I realized that a FortossimoII would actually do it, and an audigy wouldn't.... amazing.....

The simple fact, is that Creative didn't choose to give their cards TOS output by default, and in my opinion it was to make more money... maybe Creative doesn't have too many Minidisc player users to warrant TOS by default? They already have pretty good MD player related software, I just wished my live, or my audigy (live is in old rig, Audigy is in new rig) had TOS out.

No. I have yet to see a portable MP3 player to receive files via optical cable
If I'm not mistaken, the new Nomad Jukebox 3 does have optical input and it can record at many different bitrates from 128-320kbps.

The back plate does not allow enough space to fit TOS link connectors on an Audigy card. The Fortissimo does not have digital coax out, 5.1 analog out, or a IEEE1394 all of which the Audigy has. But you're probably right, Creative put more useful connectors on the back of the card for typical users and left of the TOS link connectors for the basic models because they wanted to make more money... If you can afford an MD player, you can afford the Platinum version of the Audigy. Not only do I not know anyone who owns an MD player I have never seen anyone using one in person ever, though there are more common uses for the connectors than MD players.

Creative doesn't use a dongle out of the back to connect your speakers and devices so therefore it doesn't have the kind like you would find on the bare Hercules card. That's why they came out with the i/o card and the live drive so that you can have the extra connectors that you want. I have the original Live Retail and it has the i/o card with coax but not optical connectors but they did add it to the platinum and the Audigy.

MD players are becoming more reasonable to purchase now and they're smaller and more protected than cd. They can be written to more than once. Alot of cd players will not play a cdrw correctly(most new players do though). Alot of Audiophiles have MD players now cause they say the quality is much better than mp3 and it's very convienient and portable. I don't have one but then again I have most of my music on mp3 and I don't care as long as I get a decent recording that doesn't crackle and pop.

Notice that he said Optical out of the Audigy? I assumed that he already had the Live drive 2. Anyway, a front break out box is very convenient if you do recording and whatnot.

I think some of you might have misunderstand me, but I have the audigy platinum version, and the front panel has an optical output. I was wondering if I can use the output to output files to my MD player?

Thanks for the replies though

Hypemarked: You first said MP3 player, now a MD player - which one is it? Anyway, I've been recording MP3s (as well as dozens of other formats) optically from my PC to my MD player/recorder for years now. I have an older Aureal Vortex II soundcard (Xitel Platinum Storm) with optical S/PDIF TOSLINK out.

I believe that with 'any' soundcard with an optical out, that you are able to find a optical cable to record to your MD player. I'm not 100% positive though, but back in the day there were also other optical outs (non TOSLINK?) and all you had to do was find the right optical adapter cable to connect the two devices. Isn't it a coaxial optical cable that i'm thinking of?

I'll be really bummed if what FishtankX said is true that the Audigy (basic model) cannot be used with a MD recorder to record optically, because this was my next planned sound card.

The basic Audigy will not enable you to record optically WITHOUT the Live drive 2 or the breakout box that comes with the Audigy.

Yes, You can record mp3 to MD with any kind of sound card if you have the right cable.

What's the exact adapter you need to hook up the Audigy's digital out to the coaxial digital input in a receiver? A radioshack link would be best. thanks 🙂
