When I was using my original Explorer mouse, I had to use a mousepad, as it wouldn't be accurate because of the grain on my desk.

But I just tried with my new 3.0 Explorer, and it works perfect on my desk. So, I'll try going mousepadless for a while, and see if I like it!

Now, the reason optical mice don't work on glass is because of the way they were built: if you have ever heard the term "laser mice" being applied to any optical mouse, the person speaking doesn't know what they're talking about. The red light emitted from the mice is just that - a light emitting diode, more commonly known as an LED. They're used in newer street lights, and are extremely bright for their size. LEDs do no "detecting" on the surface the mouse is on. They simply illuminate it, so that the "optical sensor" can do its job. Some argue that the optical sensor is a laser, but in fact, it is a miniature camera,

I use a standard mouse pad under my original Microsoft Intellieye Explorer mouse to save both the desk and the bottom of the mouse from wearing out. Also resting my hand on a mouse pad feels more comfortable than a hard desk.

i have always used a mouse pad w/ mine except on one machine in my basement, it is sitting on a cheapo desk, well anyways moving the mouse around litterally wore the desktop off of it down to the particle board... so i would suggest to anyone to use one... no matter how cheap the desk was it was worth saving it for the price of a pad or at least a piece of paper...
