Optical Mouse - USB or PS2?

Ok here is my issue. I have a Logitech Duel Optical mouse plugged into my USB port. Using a rate checker program I see it is running at a rate of 125 hz. I would like to turn this up to 200 hz but under my mouse settings in the Device Manager it doesn't have an option to increase this number. I have tried every mouse rate changer program I can find and none of them work. So here are my questions,

Should you run a mouse using the USB port or the PS2 port? Is there a big difference between the two when it comes to a mouse? Is there a way to make the PS2 port read mouse data at 200 hz? I am using Windows XP home with SP1 installed.

Thanks,

Well I would stick with the USB port, even 1.1 is faster than the PS/2 port. Also, as far as logitech products go you will not benefit from the higher refresh rate unless you load logitech's special drivers to take advantage of a higher speed. The problem with that is that it implements a lot of reverse accel settings and such that could affect your gameplay drastically if you use it for gaming. Stick with USB.

Shouldn't really matter. I use an MX500 and MX700, both PS2 ports, and no issues.

Ditto. My Cordless Desktop MX is hooked up through the PS/2 ports, and my mouse seems to work/respond quick enough... Although the USB port is obviously the quicker refreshing of the 2.

USB is the way to go.

However, (this hasn't been said yet). Your USB mouse won't work in DOS-based programs like Norton Ghost, for example.

I always have a USB-->PS2 adapter handy for things like that. Just a thought.

PS/2 has a lower latency than USB, however USB has the upperhand with bandwidth, lots of it. either way i doubt you'd notice it.

i love my old dual optical, but i used it for almost 3 years, the feet were gone and it was rubbing its belly 🙂 it was time to move on.

It works just fine as long as your BIOS supports it and the DOS mouse driver is loaded in the boot sequence. Works in PartitionMagic (DOS Boot); Drive Copy 4 (DOS Boot) and TrueImage 7 (DOS Boot)

well i only have 2 USB ports and i could be using them for other things. ever seen a joystick of scanner use ps/2 port? nope
