Optical Mouse PS/2 Issue, converter

I bought my father an optical mouse for his Pentium 290 MMX (o/c 233) . He was tired of cleaning his other mouse. Anyways, his computer has a serial mouse port, and I have a converter from serial to ps/2.....With the converter, it will not detect any PS/2 mouse i put on it, including the optical. Serial works fine....is this just a case of a bad converter or will they work for this?
 
The difference between serial and PS/2 mice is not in the adapter but rather in the internal circuitry. Some mice are dual purpose but they are becoming few and far between.
