Optical mouse pointer stops working until I reconnect it

I have a computer which is running WInXP home. It has an optical mouse. every now and then the mouse "stalls"... the pointer stops working, until I disconnect it and reconnect it.

Has anyone had this type of problem?

The mouse is a USB mouse and the mobo is a Gigabyte with a 2.6 ghz P4- 400 fsb...

Any help would be appreciated...

This is an issue with Windows XP. If it only stalls after coming out of standby, follow these instructions.

When the computer comes out of standby, you should notice that the mouse turns on, then resets. Make sure that the mouse doesn't register any light (probably by turning its sensor away from the surface) and then put it back down when it resets. This should stop it from stalling.
