Optical mouse pointer stops working until I reconnect it

I have a computer which is running WInXP home. It has an optical mouse. every now and then the mouse "stalls"... the pointer stops working, until I disconnect it and reconnect it.

Has anyone had this type of problem?

The mouse is a USB mouse and the mobo is a Gigabyte with a 2.6 ghz P4- 400 fsb...

Any help would be appreciated...

This is an issue with Windows XP. If it only stalls after coming out of standby, follow these instructions.

When the computer comes out of standby, you should notice that the mouse turns on, then resets. Make sure that the mouse doesn't register any light (probably by turning its sensor away from the surface) and then put it back down when it resets. This should stop it from stalling.

I have the same problem, however, it is not an issue of the system coming out of standby or hibernation. I have disabled both, there appears to be no rhyme or reason for the mouse 'stalling', I have even set the USE hubs to NOT power down at all.

It happened to me before too. After a while the entire motherboard stopped working. I'm still not sure what the problem was but it's not a mouse problem since the same mouse is being used in a new motherboard without problem.

I'm having the same problem with a compaq I bought the other day for a second computer. I'm thinking about putting the connector on to connect directly to a PS2 port or just going to a regular mouse. It's not worth the frustration.

Just thought about something from reading some of the other posts on different topics. On this computer I have the mouse running through a 4 port hub whereas on my other computer it was directly connected to a USB port. The hub is a cheap one I picked up somewhere, but it does have it's own power. Maybe a better hub is in order. Wonder if that could be the problem. I'll have to unplug it from the hub and see if that fixes it.
