Optical Mouse is Spazzing

My optical mouse keeps spazzing out on me and just starts moving spontaneously all across the screen. This gets really annoying when playing FPS. I know this is a problem with optical mouses but is their anyway to fix it?

i have the same problem with my optical mouse
while playing games it suddenly looks all the way up or down and starts spinning is circles
i got the latest drivers and it still happens

Which mouse? USB? If so, have you tried a different USB port?

If it's Logitech, do you the the drivers installed for it?

It's a MS mouse with a USB 2.0. Switching the ports hasn't made any difference, since I have unplugged and plugged in the mouse numerous times over the years and put them into different ports everytime most likely. Could attaching the PS/2 converter change anything? Or si this purely an Optical Mouse probem?

I got this a lot when I had my original Logitech Optical Mouse, things got better with the MX700 and now things are superb with my MX1000.

I haven't changed my mouse surface - wooden desk - in this time.

You arn't using it on a reflective serfice are you?

It's a much softer surface with no rough texture to it. I find it's more responsive. But the ink on it does reflect light. I hope I'm explaining this clearly.

put something under neath it. if the textures yourputting the mouse on are two close together then the mouse will get confused and you get that jump. give it something to base it self off.

What texture do you think I should use? The soft smoother one or the rougher one? I am using the smooth one now.

there are mouse pads made just for optical mice, but i just use a piece of plain printer paper taped to my desk, this has completely stopped my mouse acting erratically when i was using it on just the desktop surface....

It's a Microsoft product and this should not be a surprise. Can MS make anything that does not spaz out (Windows)?

Get a logitech MX518 I have not had it skip once on me. My old IBM and MS mouse are terrible. My brother has a Kensington mouse and it is the worst I have ever used.

Note: the IBM mouse is made by Micro Innovations not Internaional Buisness Machines.

Yeah, check your drivers, but check the surface you're using. I had a desk with a simulated wood grain finish, and any optical mice would just freak out on it. Throw a piece of paper on the desk and use that - if the mouse gets better, you know where your problem is.

I'm having a similar issue, but I'm pretty sure it's not the mouse. It happens in brief "psychotic" spells, where when I select anything (icons, a place on a webpage, a place on a document) the cursor/highlite/etc will immediately begin jumping around to different icons/ scrolling down the screen/etc. I'm not sure how better to describe this. No surface issues. This mouse was fine before (an optical logitech wireless). I thought maybe I was getting interference, so I tried a wired ball mouse...same problem. My techie friends aren't sure what the heck is the problem. Any help will be appreciated!!!
