I'm using a Microsoft Optical Mouse and I need to find a way to make it work over a glass surface. Currently I have a plastic sheet which I used on my previous desk for a smooth writing layer. When I put this layer over the glass surface, the mouse will work, I know that it won't work over the glass surface. The plastic itself is semi-seethrough. I am trying to avoid a mouse pad which saves space on my desk and it gives me more freedom to use the mouse on any part of the table I want. My question is, Is there any thin plastic layering will reflect the light from my mouse that I can put either under the glass or on the top?

Also keep in mind I need it to reflect pretty well so that I don't lose the reliability of my pointer moving when I move the mouse. I do n't want to play a game and have to turn right twice to turn once since it couldn't pick up a reflection.

why not just use a mousepad? how would a sheet of dark plastic save more room than a mouse pad/mousing surface? all you need is something that is not clear to put the mouse on, whether this is a piece of paper, a dead cat, whatever. Check out hardocp and their ratpadz things. I think they make ones for optical mice now.

3m makes a nice and thin mousing surface.

Paper would work but it looks cheap... I want some kind of plastic layering I can put underneath the glass so I still get the glass surface and use my mouse at the same time.

I think having glass over anything would still not work with an optical mouse. It's the glass itself that's the problem.

I just tried the glass thing with my dark wood computer desk under the glass. It works somewhat but gives you some lag which would be annoying. What about using a laminated 8 x 10 or larger photograph?

I vote for the dead cat.
