Optical mouse good for FPS games?

I mean fast action FPS games like Quake 3, Rainbow 6 series and CS.

Though my Logitech classic 2 button is smooth as fast enough for quick movement, it is not accurate enough for per-pixel-sniping. I've heard people complaining optical mice when twitching them too fast, does it mean no good in Quake 3?

I just love my Intelli mouse explorer in Unreal Tournament. Well that's all I play!

I have a MS Intellimouse Optical and Logitech Mouseman and I prefer the Optical with a ratpad, real smooth. Just make sure your optical has a good surface.

Some people swear by optical mice, but in my opinion they are not very well suited to FPS play. I used an Intellimouse Explorer for a while, and I liked it quite a bit for general Windows navigation, and games that didn't require very fast movement (RTS, Adventure, RPGs, etc.) but found that it had a tendency to lose tracking during FPS play. The mousing surface makes somewhat of a difference (optical mice work better with a solid, uniform colored mouse pad), but to get the most out of Quake 3, your best bet is a ball mouse... or a mouse with balls, if you will. :)

I went from the Explorer to the Razer Boomslang 2000, and am very happy with it. I am hesitant to recommend it, as it takes some getting used to, and is very definitely overpriced ($80-90!), but it's about the most accurate mouse you can get right now. You might also take a look at Karna's upcoming product, the Mamba, as it looks like it is more in the style of a Logitech mouse ergonomically.

MS explorer is the best for FPS I have been playing them for years and it is far better then a ball mouse. My 2 cents

Renod, have u encountered the "lost tracking during fast movement" problem as decribed by Sengar?

I use the Logitech MouseMan Optical with a ratpad for CS and it works very well. The only "problem" I encounter is that the rat pad is so slick that sometimes my mouse moves ever so slightly without my hand even on it, but I just tap it and it stops.

The logitech and microsoft optical mice use the same sensor so performance wise they are the same. Just pick which shape/colour/button config you like the best.

I don't know about fast movement glitches, I can move it as fast as I want without issue....the only problem I've had with it is lifting.
A lot of people lift the mouse slightly and move it around, and that confuses it. I didn't even know I did it until I got my optical mouse, it took a while but once I broke myself of the lifting habit it's worked excellently for FPS games. I think that people that have trouble with them either have bad mice or are lifters without knowing it like I was.

Also they aren't quite as surface friendly as the adds would have you believe....mine hates my desk, but on a good mouse pad it works like a champ. No complaints at all.

I use my Optical Explorer in UT and many others and it's great!

I've gotten used to the problem if it suddenly poionts me to the floor (because of the lifting described above)! Minor annoyance, but overcomable (sp?).

I have the Boomslang 2000 also, and the Boomslang IS better, but not that much better!!
