Optical Mouse dying or USB/mobo/software problem?

I'm having a problem with my optical mouse but I'm not sure if it's that the mouse is dying or that it's a problem with the USB ports on my motherboard, the motherboard, a driver, or software.

The mouse will suddenly shut off and then it will come back on after a few seconds. This only became a problem about three weeks ago. I'm also having the same exact problem with another optical mouse that's only a year or two old.

I've tried both mice in this computer and on different USB ports and seem to have the same problem. Is this what happens when an optical mouse starts to die?

I have the same problem...almost. I have an Mx610 and a Cordless Click and neither function properly on x32. But I found that by plugging in both receivers, on x64, caused the Cordless Click to work as it should. I'm still working on x32.

First, try the mice on another computer ... if it still acts up ... Bad Mouse
If it works ok, you either have a Bad USB port / controller chip on your
Mobo or PCI Card .... or possibly you need to reload the USB or Mouse
Software ... it is also possible that one of the latest MS Patches is the
cause ... anything installed in the last 3-4 weeks ? ? ?

I also have a Microsoft Intellimouse Optical ... it was on a PS2 Mouse
port thu a USB / PS2 Adapter .. worked fine for about 4 years ... then
suddenly, it would not work correct on PS2 Jack ... tried new Mouse
same problem .. so now mouse is connected to a USB Port and works fine

oh ya thats the sign of it dying. Trust me buddy.. my last 4 mouses have done the same thing. Last one mx518 did that plus it developed a shortage in the cord. All 3 of my intelli explorer 3.0 microsoft mouses developed this problem way to soon. Get ready to buy a new mouse.

MS Explorer mice are famous for cord shorts. However, when I had one, instead of buying another one, I called MS and they sent me a new one, without an RMA.

Your mouse problems sound similar to what I had two years back with my laptop's MS optical mouse. The mouse would be working fine and then suddenly go dead (in the sense that the pointer stopped moving, but the mouse itself stayed lit). In the beginning it readily recovered if I just unplugged and then replugged it into the USB port, but it got worse over time. I finally decided that it was some sort of intermittent short in the wiring at the point that the cable leaves the mouse. Got a new one, and everything worked fine again.

I just rebooted into x64 and was surprised that my MX610 was working properly...for the first time. The only things that had changed was that the Cordless Click was plugged into the PS/2, and I moved the MX610's receiver to the front. I had had the MX610 in the front before without any improvement, and I had had it plugged in without the Cordless Click receiver anywhere, so I have no idea of what the problem or the cure was.
