Optical mouse croaking like a frog?

Just this morning my mouse started acting up. Everytime I moved it, it croaked like a frog...not really the mouse, the sound came from inside the case, probably the hard drive. And my pointer would change to the hourglass 'busy' symbol and wouldn't change back. Luckily, I had an old mouse laying around to replace it...but should I just throw the optical away?
 
What kind of an optical mouse is it? MS? Logitech?
I would check to see what kind of warranty is on it cause it could be covered and you could get a replacement. It doesn't hurt to check.

It might not even be your mouse, it could be the OS acting up or something else. My MS intellimouse explorer acted up for awhile and I replaced it with my ps2, but when I reformatted and installed the os again it worked.
