Optical Mice...any good? Experiences/your thoughts...

Hey all,

What are your experiences with optical mice?

I (just) bought a Logitech optical, USB mouse and it seems to do the job well. Plus it looked a helluva lot more cooler than Microsoft's cheapest optical.

Saved game? There are NO saved-games in real life...(!)
hehe, i often talk with my friend "wouldent it be cool to just get gibbed by a rocket launcher, and then respawn back at home."

about the optical mice tho, yeah.. the intellieye explorer is deadly accurate and never needs cleaning, now i just hope those little plastic pads dont wear out any time soon =[]

I hear ya.

I flinch every time I get taken out by some sniper at the other end of the map in TFC. :Q

Then one clicks the rt mouse button and everything's hunky-dory (again)😉

I'd be willing to trade in my MS "Fat Boy" for a much easier to grip Logitech optical. I dig the accuracy of the optical, but I hate MS's Marquis De Sade approach to ergonomics.

MS's little white mouse opti is ok, but it has that weird slant on one side that just pisses me off. They both use rather sensitive switch gear for the buttons, so lightly resting one's fingers on the buttons is out. The big plus for the MS mice is that the scroll wheels have the finest, most accurate feel to them in tha bidness.

The best part of any optical is that you can shine them in people's eyes during LAN Fests.

I don't know what the Logitech Optical looks like but the MS Intellimouse Optical (not the Intellimouse with Optical Tech. that looks alot like the old Intellimouse) looks really good. The Explorer is way too big, even the silver paint doesn't help it much.

the blue color does add a nice tone to the system. but then so does the expensive a$$ silver\grey explorer that i have.

can anyone find info on the scanning rates of the MS mouse compared with the logitech ones? I would never buy an MS mouse cause the designs are such total crap, but since i heard about how in some games the sampling rates were such that there would be odd skips when executing fast manoeuvres, so im kinda hoping the logitechs sampling rate is faster.

Unfortunately, this seems to be the case. I experienced such a problem playing Quake3 using the MS Intellimouse Optical. As the Optical was released after the original Intellieye mice (regular and Explorer), I thought they had fixed this problem, especially since I had read this in a review.

The problem was 'fixed' by increasing the mouse sensitivity in the game. I would prefer to have more flexibility. I guess we'll have to wait for the next-gen optical mice from Microsoft with higher sampling rates as this technology needs to mature somewhat (other than that, I like the mouse).

i like the size of the explorer optical. Took about a month to get used to, but now other mice dont seem right.

Damn thing does spazz out every now and then playing UT, but the big refresh rate seems to make it rock solid in Starcraft/AOE2
The new MS opticals might be better for gaming with 25% more refreshes per second

🙂

I use the Explorer...best damn mouse I've ever used. It's hard getting used to "other" mice as I am used to the size and feel of this one.

I've had the Intellimouse Explorer since Christmas and all I can say is GET ONE! It's an awesome mouse even in QuakeIII (which I happen to play a lot of) The "skipping" you talk about is pretty much non-existent in my opinion, and even if there is a little, its definitlely not as bad as a regular ball-mouse. I do think the explorer mouse is a bit on the large size, but feels fine once you get used to it.
