Digital optical is for sound.

S-cable = s-video? = video.

What do you have connected now?

I guess I'm kind of confused why the tv is connected to the dvd player for sound then...

How is it connected to your receiver then?

If you're not using a digtial coaxial connection or a digital optical connection, that would be a good way to go. If you're just using RCA for the connection, you're not going to get Dolby Digital or DTS transmitted.

Ditch all of your RCA Audio cables and replace them with either digital coax or optical, depending on what your components support. This will ensure your DVD player and satellite receiver send Dolby Digital (5.1) sound to your receiver for processing.

Stick with the S-Video cables for your video feeds. If your TV and DVD player both support component video, you might consider utilizing this method of feeding video to the television as your picture will be sharper and more vibrant.
