Optical Drives don't like each other

I'm trying to get a Pioneer DVD-RW and Plextor CD-RW to work together on the same cable.

I set one as the master and the other as slave, tried flipping them, but the computer will either only recognize one of them, or neither. I've tried setting them to cable select, no difference.

I have hard drives are the primary master and slave, I'm trying to get the optical drives to be the secondary master and slave. I would make the optical drives the slaves to the HD's, but I don't think the cable lengths will let me do that.

I've had this problem on multiple systems, so I'm assuming it's me.

Are optical drives just not meant to share IDE cables?

Also, in reading the first post:

<< When you first load your OS The order that you load things is critical. The best order in which to do this is: OS, board drivers, video drivers, nic, modem, with sound card drivers last. >>

You mean there's a way to select the load order? :Q Do tell.

did you try switching the physical location of the drives along the cable? (i.e. which one is plugged into the middel versus the end connector?)

as far as load order, they're referring to stuff that isn't picked up by windows...i.e. you have to insert a disk for each of those items to load the drivers (most of the time). so it's up to you which disks you put in first.

Yessir, I've had both drives as slave in both cable positions, master in both cable positions, and cable select in both cable positions. In all cases, one drive or neither was picked up.

I've had this happen on the last 'puter with 2 different optical drvies, and that's why I wondered if 2 optical drives could share an IDE cable. I'm out of ideas.
