optical drive woes

i have three optical drives, one is a new external plextor dvd-burner which works great, and the other two came with my gateway 2.5 years ago. i am sure that there are newer firmware versions for them that might make them a bit more reliable and generally better functioning.

one, the more important, is a cd burner, a lite-on ltr-48246S. i think i even found a new firmware for it on the lite-on site, but when i run the flashing executable it says it wants an ltr-48246S, which is just what the device manager says i have, but the flashing program says i don't have one. why would it do this?

secondly i have an hl-dt-st brand drive (i have no idea who made it), a dvd reader, which i think is dying as about 50% of the time it doesn't show up in the device manager and barely works anyway. could anyone at least guide me to who manufactured this drive?

finally, i have no virtual drives installed, but i keep having one show up in my computer and device manager, called axv cd/dvd-rom scsi cd-rom device. what is this and why is it there?
