If you PM me, it would be nice if you use the following format:

Pacific Digital boxes a number of OEM 8x ±RW drives from several manufacturers, including Lite-On, NEC, and BTC. Lite-On models 811 and 851 are very desirable. I have no experience with NEC's, and I haven't heard much good about BTC's. All of the boxes look alike, but you can identify the manufacturer of the drive from the serial number which can be found in the same area as the UPC code.

Serial numbers 42xx, 43xx, 47xx and 48xx (all digits) are Lite-On 811's or 851's.
Serial numbers like 41D6H7432xx are probably NEC (ND-2500A?)
Serial numbers starting with the letter "P" are probably BTC DRW1008IM

More generally:

If the serial number is all digits beginning with a 4, it is probably LiteOn.
If the serial number begins with a 4 and has a combination of letters and numbers, it is probably NEC.
If the serial number begin with the letter P, it is probably BTC.

My Pacific Digital Mach-8 burner (s/n 4793xxxxxxxx wasn't rebadged in any way, except the box. The drive inside says Lite-On LDW 851S.

Check Staples for a Pacific Digital 4x DVD+/-RW drive that's on clearance. $37.50 AR for B&M, $50 online. Newegg also has the NEC 2500A 8x for $80-85
