Optical drive hardlocks computer

This is a continuation of this thread but now it's not just the drive, as I've replaced it with a DVD-RW that exhibits the same problem: hardlocking the computer after inserting a disc. This happens occasionally, but usually only after the machine has been up for a day or two. Things I've tried:

[*]Replace drive itself (was a lite-on dvd-rom)
[*]Replace the ide cable 3 times (this is a brand new one)
[*]Uninstall ide controller from device manager and reinstall it
[*]Double checked that I'm running the latest drivers for my IS7
[*]Curse at the computer and threaten violence

I've about had it!

UPDATE: now I don't have to wait a day or longer for this to happen. It just happened while swapping discs and I had only been up for an hour! :|

the same thing is happening to me right now. I think that this is due to the fact that my PSU had exploded and causing my motherboard to go on lock-ups when inserting a disc. After I got a new PSU, the lock-ups started to happen so I think that my motherboad is fuk up.
 
It is definately not the optical drives because I have replaced all of mine and the lock-ups still happens so I think that it is the MOBO, but since am poor, I have to stick with it.
 
I posted my problem over at Abit's forums and a few are telling me that it could be a power supply issue. This sounds ludicrous to me, as the system is stable EXCEPT when inserting a disc. It has never crashed when spinning up the disc that's already in the drive, even when I'm doing cd-to-cd copies.

I always advocate that a quality 300w (or 330 in my case) PSU should be more than enough to run a regular system. With my rails staying within 3%, I don't see any reason why this shouldn't be the case. What do you think?
 
I don't know what other drives you have in the system and how you have them configured, but have you tried different jumper settings like master/slave/cable select?

You may also want to try to swap the devices around if you have something else on the chain with the DVD-ROM.
