Optical Drive for Thinkpad X60s

Just got a X60s. Doesn't have a built in optical drive, so I was wondering if I should get the X6 Ultrabase docking station or if just a CD-Rom external drive should do?

The reason I might not need a docking station is I don't need the optical drive to go with me everywhere. In fact, I will probably only use a CD-Rom for installing software once in a looonggg while.

Otherwise, I never use the optical drives on my laptops anyways.

But please advise whether the docking station will come in handy, or an external drive will work just fine on the X60s. Thanks

THe ultra base will cost a bit more, but will give you more ports, and a cleaner way to take the whole thing with you if you ever do need to.

That said, any 3rd party external optical will do for the most part.... But Lenovo won't support the 3rd party option if you have problems using it with the X60. - SO it might make sense depending how techy you are to buy the Lenovo external option.

I'm sorry, I'm not that tech savvy.

I bought a Iomega external drive to install some software, and that seemed to go well.

Is there a chance using a 3rd party drive in this fashion will DAMAGE my Thinkpad?

thank you

No chance at all. Any 3rd party device should work, but sometimes as with any vendor, you can run into odd nuance issues from time to time.
