Optical drive acting weird

Apparently my cd-rw/dvd drive only likes to install things with one disk. Recently while installing a game that takes three cds, the machine crashed every time I tried it. Another game off of a single disk installed just fine. Tonight while installing something, I had to change disks, and the machine crashed again. The event viewer showed an event id 7036, which was apparently the "The IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service service entered the stopped state." which I don't really understand because it was supposed to be intalling, not burning. I'm a little confused here. Any suggestions?
