Folks Im a hard core game and recently had the Boomslang 2000 which was designed from the ground up to be a hi FPS and DPI mouse to give you the utmost precision. Since I upgraded to WIN XP, The Boomslang middle mouse scrolling option has become inconsistant and Boomslang is working on XP drivers but for the meantime I went out and picked up an OPTICAL CORDLESS Logitech Mouseman for $69 and love the freedom it gives but the only thing I am left feeling a bit uncomfortable with is the mouse motion doesnt seem as fluid as the Boomslang.....(I have tweaked all the speeds, and acceleration levels every which way) I think the reason is simply because the Boomslang was a 2000 DPI mouse and the Mouseman is an 800 DPI. Well now I am wondering if I should get the top of the line Microsoft Cordless optical. Do you think the performance of this mouse would be smoother and better?

Basically I just would now like to know how the Logitech and Explorer Cordless Optical mice compare head to head in precision, and performance?

ANyone have any thoughts or even better yet a web site that may have reviewed BOTH??

thanks all!

I have been using the regular optical wheel mouse from Logitech for a while now. I think the main reason you are seeing a lack of fluid motion is because the mouse you are using is wireless. Generally wireless isnt great for hardcore gamers. You may be better off with dealing with the problems you are having with your boomslang, or, if you like optical, maybe you should try the new dual optical mouse from Logitech. It actually has two CMOS cameras and that is supposed to improve the fluidity of motion on that end.

Cordless mice have bad refresh rates. The logitech one in particular has an average of 40Hz, pretty low. The microsoft one is not great, but it's much better with an average of 120Hz.

I know that you want a wireless mouse, but you also seem to like performance so here I go. I've owned a boomslang 2000 too (utill it died) and then I switched to a Logitech Pilot Wheel (ball mouse); the day I used my Logitech for the first time I realised how hyped Boomslang mice were and how mediocre their performance was.

So to sum it up

Ballmouse -> I suggest Logitech Pilot
Optical -> I suggest Microsoft Explorer ver 3 (6000 DPI)
Wireless -> I suggest to not buy any.

thanks for the run down...any more feedback??

I need as much as possible

ALso can you please explain to me more about this Logitech Pilot mouse...it sounds interesting , especially since you prefer it over the supposed 'mother' of all gaming mice, the BoomSLang 2000

The Intel wireless mouse that uses bluetooth is the best wireless I have ever used. It is very responsive. Bad things though... its kinda heavy (uses ball and has batteries in it), low on buttons (only 2 +wheel), and uses up batteries like a mother. Other than that it performs way better than any of those optical wireless ones from logitech and microsoft.

I kinda love the cordless freedom but the gaming FPS experience is subpar....is Microsoft's version alot better/ worse??

Am I just not going to get good gaming accuracy and performance with ANY cordless??

thanks!

Well here is a picture of it. It's a plain wheel mouse with two buttons. It's small and very accurate. Due to it's small size it recuires less effort to move it around. I play a lot of RTS games, especially Starcraft Broodwar and I've never played faster before.

Advantages:
1. Small size, very fast movement.
2. Accurate.
3. No skipping.

Disadvantages:
1. The inside gets messy and you have to clean it every couple of weeks.
2. You need a good mousepad, I use a ratpad and the movement is effortless.
3. No side buttons

On the other hand you have the Microsoft Explorer. I've owned versions 1 and 2 and I was very dissapointed. They both died after 3 months for the same reason; the cable got ditached.

Advantages:
1. It's optical, no need to clean.
2. No need for a mouse pad.
3. Extra programmable buttons (2).

Disadvantages
1. All the previous versions skipped for me. They were horrible for Q3 and CS, however I haven't used version 3.
2. They die easily.

To be honest I'd be tempted to try the MS Explorer ver3 out myself.

MenderChuck..can you tell me more about this INTEL optical mouse...i didnt even know Intel made mice

Also, Has anyone yet used the Microsoft Intellimouse infra Red version 3 yet?...Im very curious how it now handles FPS games like Counterstrike, Quake III, Unreal Tournament, ect.

This Logitech Optical Cordless is a cool idea and works decent for Apps, surfing and WIndows but when it comes to gaming it isnt very precise at all

Any cordless mouse will be jittery and have a long response time. I have the Microsoft Cordless Optical, and the problems are consistent. It doesn't matter which brand you choose, since it is working on radio frequency, there is latency between the recieve and the mouse, thus it will not be as perfect and as "fluid" as a corded mouse.

DarkFudge2000: IMHO, Logitech makes much better mice than Microsoft, whether cordless or corded. What's more imporant for you however, is the fact that cordless mice (regardless of manufacturer) don't work well for gamers.

Optical -> I suggest Microsoft Explorer ver 3 (6000 DPI)

It doesnt do 6000 dpi it samples 6000 times a second. According to Tom's Hardware Microsoft Intellimice do 400 dpi(or cpi) & the Logitech versions do 800 dpi/cpi.

i would agree cordless isn't great for gaming. my dad has a cordless optical mouse and cordless keyboard and since he plays no FPS he absolutely loves them, so they are excellent for what they are.

I've tried both the MS and Logitech cordless. They're not bad for general use, but not good for gaming- period.

I've gone to the Logitech dual optical and there is no comparison.
I've never tried a Boomslang, but I can definately say that the dual optical is the best out of every other mouse I've tried.

So if you don't like the cordless you have now, you definately won't like the cordless from MS.
