i have read rumors that they will be discontinued and i have read responses from amd that they will be with us through 2006. if they are not going to be discontinued, why is there still such a buying frenzy?

The hardcore clockers love them, and will pay a lot of money for them, so they all got baught up. A lot of them are trickeling on to ebay, where they sell for 50% to 100% over retail.

Actually, the head manager or whatever of the Opterons has stated that they are beginning the retail Opty phase-out, and this shows through everyone being out of stock.

Mwave has just about all of them in stock right now, and the prices are down a bit.

Love the Opterons but that news won't get me in a frenzy. With M2(AM2) coming out soon I'd just as soon see how those do or get a 3800X2 for under $300 next year after AMD(and Intel) do some price cutting. Also the new budget chip "Manila" (yuck) is supposed to have 512mb L2 cache!

The buying frenzy was from the fact you could get a opty 144, 146, 148 for $300 or less (when they first came out) and overclock it to at least 2.6Ghz and with it's 1MB cache you end up with a FX-55. Some have manged to get 144's up to 3ghz on air. I paid $250 for my 148, it's running at 3050Mhz and I saved at least $700 from not buying an FX-57.

To be honest I don't know why they came out with a skt 939 opty to begin with since it would/does compete with there FX series. Amd realized this mistake and now everyone wants a cheap FX before AMD does say they aren't making more.

I think in part it's also in hopes of getting a good stepping. The general idea is that earlier releases OC better.
