Opteron285@ 2.6GHZ?????? In January??????

you can order 2xx series opterons through me. I am very, very fair in pricing and can beat pretty much anyone out there.

PM me and i'll get you a quote.

I don't live in US plus that was not my question 🙂 The latest Opteron will always be expensive than the older one whether I order through you or someone else. PlusI don't have that option as I am getting the PC from a company. Their price is reasonable anyway.

i would say to your original question is what type of relationship you have with the builder. if friendly, i would ask, if not friendly i would just wait.

I am his first time customer. He was friendly enough to suggest on his own that if Opteron 280 takes too long to get he would put an Opteron 275 temporarily and then replace it with Opteron 280 onsite.

So I was thinking of asking if he could do that with the 285 instead 🙂

>if not friendly i would just wait.

You mean wait for the release of Opteron 285? Right? The only thing is that I need to finish some work that my current PC can't handle and waiting too long is not an option.

Hey, Dave,

I PMed you about a quote on Opteron 2xxs, please let me know ASAP.

and also, are the 285 s coming very soon, might it be better to order after the price drops in Jan, maybe?

You should be fine. I would think that you would be able to get 2.8GHz out of the 280 now, and I don't think that it's going any higher with the 285. 2.8GHz seems to be very maximum that the current 90nm AMD cpus can handle.

Then why have people gotten 3.2GHz out of their 148's on air?

I don't think the 2xx series are very overclockable because they go in server mobos, which don't have many overclocking features.

The air cooling is highly abnormal air and almost as good as watercooling. Also I haven't seen a dual core AMD cpu at over 3ghz fully stable on air, or water for that matter.

There is a good reason why AMD is not really releasing anything close to the 3.0GHz range and consider that it took that long for FX-60 to even come out and that's @ 2.6GHz.

BTW, overclock is never a "feature", AMD never designed their chip for overclocking purpose. The opterons are considered as good overclocking CPUs because AMD has to clock chips with higher potential very conservativly because they want maximum stability and low failure rates in the server environment.
