iam moving to dual core now
so i need some advice here
i was thinking of
4200+X2 2.2GHZ 512KBx2 L2 cache
Opteron 165 1.8GHZ 1MBx2 L2 cache
both are dual core processors

which one would be the better choice dudez
i cant wait for newer sockets

Even if you don't have a link to a review, benchmark, or FPS testing of any kind, please post your ideas if you have any knowledge of the difference between the 2, strictly on a gaming perspective. I know the specs of both and I am not looking for a discussion based on anything except which is better for GAMING

thanks in advance

I can't really help at all (I posted a similar thread about an hour ago) but one very important thing you need to add to your OP is whether or not you're willing to overclock and take the associated risks. That will play a big role in answers you may possibly get.

The folks on AT know the deal on all the latest steppings, where to find them, what they'll do, etc. I used to know that stuff, back in the early Thunderbird days.

so this is the exact decision I faced when upgrading my PC a couple of months ago.

I ended up choosing the Opt 165 over the 4200+ - mainly because it is so easy to overclock (I am a first time overclocker, so am very cautious about this). I currently have mine running at a touch over 2.4 and I'm happy with that - don't need any extreme overclocks. This is air cooled, with stock HSF and stock voltage.

I'm very happy with my decision, but it really depends on how comfortable you would be with overclocking, and also will depend on the quality of your other components (whether they are able to be overclocked easily).

No matter what you choose, they are both good CPU's, so don't worry about it too much!

good luck!

The Opty 165 would be better, if you decide to overclock it. If you left clock speeds at stock, the 4200 would be better, but also more expensive.

good decision ?

Yes. The Opteron 165 was the better choice over the 4200+, and the 170 is a better choice over the 165. The 165 is cheaper, so if you know what you're doing with overclocking the 165 is fine, but the 170 overclocks even better and is a monster of a chip. My buddy's 170 does 2.7 GHz at 1.44V and over 2.8 GHz at 1.5+ V.

all AMD chips have the multi unlocked to go lower but the only ones that are unlocked to go higher are the FX series
