Opteron vs C2D

At what speed will a C2D overtake my 2.7GHz Opteron 165? I'm trying to figure out what model of C2D to get...

It seems that the E6600 (2.4GHz) seems to almost always beat the X2 5600 (2.8GHz, 2x1MB L2 cache) and often beats the 6000 (3GHz, 2x1MB L2 cache). Almost any C2D can clock up to 2.4GHz (the only ones that couldn't would just happen to be duds, and there aren't many of them out there), so if I were you I would just go with the cheapest one. The extra cache doesn't make that big of a difference; if you could get an E4300 up to 2.7GHz (not a hard thing to do, even with stock cooling; just up the FSB to 300 and you're done lol), it would totally trounce your Opteron.

At stock I would say an E6400/E6420. Although your Opteron is overclocked, performance on the K8 chips don't scale as well with increased clock speeds compared to C2D (almost linear).

Looking at those benchmarks it seems like upgrading to a stock clocked E6600 wouldn't offer that much of a performance improvement. However at 3.4ghz+, the C2D would destroy my Opty to the point where I could justify the upgrade cost - so sad, I love my 165

Am I right in thinking that pretty much any C2D 4300-6600 will have the same chance of hitting 3.4 and beyond?

E4xxx series has a low chance. They don't overclock as well as you'd expect from looking at the specs.

You won't consistently get 3.4+ on anything but the e6600/6700, and even then, there's quite a few that don't. However, almost any C2D can easily hit 3 gHz

E6400 should reach 3.4 without much trouble. E6300 will need good memory but it's doable too.

wtf, dude, dont get a 6600, get a 4300. the e4300 is 117 bucks right now @ mwave.com AND u can oc to at least 2.9 ghz with a 99% success rate with almost any mobo. what mobo are u putting it in? you are likely to get 3.2ghz + in an asus or gigabyte mobo. Or- if you go the cheaper route, and pair it with a 50 $ cheapo mobo, then with the 9x multiplier, you still will get 2.7ghz with a 300mhz bus, which will be as fast as or faster than your oc'd opteron 165 @ 2.8ghz. i say 4300 for the price. sell your opty; cheap upgrade

Well yeah, the 4300 will be as fast or a bit faster...thats my concern...why upgrade if its not much of an upgrade? I feel like its only worth it to upgrade if I get a sizable increase in performance, which seems to be ~3.4ghz. See what i'm saying?

ROFL.... im sorry the opty will get CRUSHED, by a C2D OC'd past 3.2ghz.

Its not even funny how badly it would crush an opty.

No competition for the intel even at that clock speed. My Intel dominates the AMD.
