according to test the answer appears the X2 but in 2 different ways...

1) the platform used by opterons are built for 100% stability so they tend to be less tweaked out of the gate and the ram required is usually ECC (IE slower)....

2) test have shown a dual core opteron was faster then same speed 2x opterons...reasons?? i belive it has to do with the 2 cores on dies and the process of the 2 cpus working together..less latency in the communication between the cores

Do a search a few of the reviews of the early X2's when they used 875's and 275s to simulate X2 performance...

But wouldn't the 2 Opterons be better in Multitasking and be more responsive under load

Why?? other then the physical difference of 2 versus 1 the opterons are merely the same 2 cores placed in their own packaging.....

Dual core as shown in reviews is for all intensive purposes 2 cpus...the proximity of the core allong with the crossbar structure connecting the cache and you have the 2 cpus that can communicate much more efficiently with the most minimal latencies...

just wanted to know because i plan to upgrade to an opteron system for use as a gaming / media system. but the X2 looks good to.

I like the Opteron because of the fact that the boards for them can hold so much memory. I like to play/ mod startrek armada2. and after some mods it say's out of swap memory. so i figured if i get system that has a lot of memory i can mod and mod and mod befor i get that message.

I know you can increase the swap memory size but having to increase it over and over is a pain in the @ss.

Dual opteron will have higher memory latency because depending what RAM location is addressed by which CPU and how you put the RAM in the board, it will sometimes have to have one CPU retrieve memory through the other.

But, on a high end board (NOT a sub-$200 board), it potentially has higher memory bandwidth also.

Got the cash then drop 2 of the 265's or 1 now and 1 later and plop in (4) 1gb sticks of ram....

You could put 2gb up to 4gb (board depending) on an X2 system now...

plus i can alway's put dual core opteron's in later when they are a little cheaper. And i love armada 2 because it is so tweakable give the time you could make a whole new game from it how fun LOL.

Can some one tell if AMD Processors are multitreaded? i have an uncle that is basicly an INTEL FAN BOY and he thinks AMD's aren't multitreaded and can't load more than one program at the exact same time..

Processors are not multithreaded. They are capable of multithreading like the HT of the P4....Look for the AMD dual core X2's as the only AMD chips currently able to handle multithreading...opterons in the xx5 series as well...

Loading more then one program at a time is not a sign of multithreaded...like most fanboys in general he sounds like a know-nothing moron....

I can run several (2-10) apps simultaneously on an AMD 3000+ single core with no issues loading other apps....dual cores and P4's with HT handle running more then 1 cpu intensive app at a time, but all cpus will run more then 1 cpu intensive app...just those like the P4 w/ HT and dual core will allow you to do it with minimal performance hit on either app...It allows 2 cpu apps not multithreaded by themselves to run as fast as they could as running on a single core chip one at a time...

Now the true multithreading comes in the app you are trying to run. If an app is capable of multithreading then it will take advantage of HT, 2nd core or 2nd cpu....If it is not one of these it will stiull run just not as fast as it could....

loading apps without lag on single core chips as as much to do with ram, IO, and windows terrible thread scheduler then a cpus inability...

in theory you should be able to launch as many apps as you could and the cpu would just keep reducing available cycles to each existing app running. Problem is you likely run out of system ram, or windows thread scheduler doesn't know how to handle it....

Boy looking at that sig you will enjoy just about any of the new cpus.....Personally I think even the 2x5 series of oprterons has waaaayyyy too high of a price premium.

Are you sure you cannot get by with 2gb of ram??? i would go with an X2 and save the money for quad core desktop to come out next year....things are moving too fast to dump a huge cashload on a system that will so much slower so soon....

Get an X2 4400+ and oc it to 4800+ levels about out of the gate at default vcore...If you are lucky get 5200+ levbels and be set for quite awhile...

I figured it was all in his head. The dumb ass burned up his Athlon XP 2400 a couple weeks ago because he tried to put a copper heatsink on it. And i guess he didn't put any termal paste on it. he said he did but my dad said he didn't because he watched him put on the heatsink. And didn't see him put on any thermal paste. WHAT A DUMB ASS. LOL

Get 2gb plus an X2, and throw the rest of the cash on a new high end vid card and you are set...trust me....

yea the old duron 1300 just can't keep up with me anymore. i had it since some time around 2001 or so. :) it's time to upgrade.
